What shipping to the UAE involves

The UAE is the shortest deep-sea route out of western India. From Nhava Sheva or Mundra to Jebel Ali is a matter of days rather than weeks, which changes what is practical: smaller trial consignments make commercial sense here in a way they do not on a six-week route to Europe, and a specification problem can be corrected on the next sailing instead of the next quarter.

It is also a re-export hub. A large share of what lands at Jebel Ali moves on into the wider GCC, East Africa and the CIS. If you are buying for onward distribution rather than domestic UAE consumption, tell us at enquiry stage, because the labelling and shelf-life headroom your final market needs may be stricter than what the UAE itself requires.

Compliance requirements

These are the rules that decide whether a consignment clears. They are the buyer's obligation at import, but most of the evidence has to be created on our side before the goods leave India - which is why we ask about them at enquiry stage rather than after production.

Halal certification

Food products entering the UAE that carry a halal claim must be accompanied by halal certification, and for processed goods that extends to the raw materials used, not only the finished product. Halal certification is overseen at federal level, with the Dubai Municipality Food Safety Department handling local compliance.

The practical point for a buyer: halal attestation has to be issued against the specific consignment before it ships. It cannot be obtained retrospectively once goods are on the water, so it has to be agreed as part of the contract rather than raised at clearance.

Labelling

Labels must carry production and expiry dates in day/month/year format, country of origin, net weight in metric units, ingredient declarations and storage conditions. Arabic labelling is required. Where Arabic stickers are used rather than printed labels, they must be non-removable and must not obscure the original label.

Products with a shelf life over three months may show month/year rather than the full date. Additives, gelatin and animal-derived ingredients must be declared where present.

Product registration

Food products sold in the UAE generally require registration with the relevant municipal authority before they can be placed on the market - in Dubai, through the Food Import and Re-export System. Registration is completed by the importer, since it is tied to a locally licensed entity, but it depends on documentation from the exporter: ingredient breakdowns, label artwork, shelf-life justification and certificates of analysis.

We supply that documentation set as part of the shipment rather than as an afterthought, because an incomplete file is the most common reason a first consignment stalls.

• Phytosanitary Certificate - for rice, wheat, spices and other plant products

• Bill of Lading - CIF or FOB as contracted
